The Florence Nightingale Foundation (FNF) is a unique organisation.

Its primary concern is to ensure improvements in patient care by enriching and developing professional practice for nurses, midwives and health visitors.

The Foundation awards scholarships each year for study in the UK and abroad.

It promotes innovation in practice and enhance the special contribution of nursing to society.

This is an opportunity for you to advance your career and influence change in the delivery of nursing care.

The Foundation and You

Each scholar writes a report of their work and this is made widely available through FNF's website or through requests to the Foundaton's headquarters.

Commemoration Service

The Florence Nightingale Commemoration Service is held each May in Westminster Abbey, London, and tickets are free. Please apply to the Foundation in March or April. Further details are available in the FNF website.

Travel Scholarships


The Foundation's Travel Scholarships are for those who want to study an aspect of nursing. midwifery, health visiting or education in the UK or overseas.

"I would encourage any nurse with any flicker of ambition or lust for innovative practice to consider applying" , says Robert Cowan, Florence Nightingale Scholar and Charge Nurse in the A&E Department of Monksland Hospital, Lanarkshire NHS Trust.

Research Scholarships


Nurses, midwives and health visitors are funded to undertake a course in research methods or undertake a research module or dissertation as part of a degree course.

According to Angela Knight Jackson, Florence Nightingale Scholar, Health Visitor, Bracknell, and lecturer in the University of Reading's Department of Health and Social Care: "Do apply for these scholarships. A Research Scholarship enabled me to develop a deeper interest in research, which I can now apply in my practice area."

Donations, legacies or sponsorships make a great difference to the achievements of the Foundation's aims and objectives.
