by Kirsteen Nixon, Museum Officer, Florence Nightingale Museum, UK The Florence Nightingale Museum Trust was established as an independent charity in 1983 and was opened in February 1989. Since that date steady visitor growth has been achieved year on year, reaching 31,535 in 2006. The Museum is located on the site of the original Florence Nightingale Training School on London’s vibrant South Bank.
According to the Museum's Trustees: “The Florence Nightingale Museum aims to promote an understanding and appreciation of Florence Nightingale's legacy and its continuing influence on nursing and people's health.” The Museum's Collections The Museum has three classes of artefacts in the collection, artefacts owned or used by Florence Nightingale, material connected with the Crimean War (1854-56): military, hospital and nursing and objects connected with the Nightingale School and St. Thomas' Hospital (1860-1910).
The archive consists of a collection of 63 letters from Florence Nightingale and, on deposit at the London Metropolitan Archives, a further collection of 700 letters from Florence Nightingale and other related papers.
We hold a large collection of historical photographs and images of our collection and we offer publishers the service of image reproduction.
Education at the Museum The Florence Nightingale Museum runs a variety of learning sessions, for schools to adult and specialist groups. We take primary school bookings for sessions Monday-Friday mornings and welcome adult groups weekday afternoons or at the weekend. Guided tours are available most week days. Friends Organisation The Museum has an active Friends organisation. The Friends of the Florence Nightingale Museum (Registered Charity No. 1070659) is committed to supporting the aims and work of a Museum that is dedicated to promoting one woman's contributions to nursing and healthcare.
