UN Economic and Social Council to focus on global public health
Global public health will be the central focus of the Geneva-based United Nations Economic and Social Council (ECOSOC) deliberations during 2009. This was emphasized by Ambassador Sylvie Lucas, Permanent Representative of Luxemborg to the United Nations, who was elected as sixty-fifth president of the Council.
ECOSOC serves as the central forum for discussing international
economic and social issues, and for formulating policy recommendations
addressed to Member States and the United Nations system.
Briefing the media, Ambassador Lucas said that the Council devote its Annual Ministerial Review to deal with global public health.
The objective of the review is to assess progress in achieving the internationally agreed development goals, arising out of the major conferences and summits.
Ambassador Lucas pointed out that progress in achieving the United Nations Millennium Development Goals in the health sector is critical for meeting all the goals.
