“Nurses are pivotal to the development of healthy communities.  This will certainly be achieved as nurses partner around the globe to build capacity everywhere and inspire the support of the United Nations in doing so.”

Dr. Ferguson-Paré is an Associate Professor at the University of Toronto, Faculty of Nursing.  She  has focused her professional and academic activities on organization and management development within health care and the development of leaders who promote autonomous professional practice and a client-centered approach to service.

During the SARS outbreak,  served as a member of the Clinical Advisory Team for the Ministry of Health and Long Term Care.  Later she was appointed to the National Advisory Committee on SARS and Public Health.  Recently, she tabled a report and recommendations on innovation in nursing service delivery, improving the patient experience and outcome measurement based on her sabbatical learning,  derived from a journey through Scandinavia, Europe, Ireland and the United Kingdom.

Dr. Ferguson-Paré is the recipient of the Distinguished Alumni Award, University of Toronto Faculty of Nursing, the Award of Excellence in Nursing Leadership, Ontario Hospital Association and the National Nursing Leadership Award, Canadian College of Healthcare Executives.

UHN  provides courageous leadership and creates academic practice for all nursing staff within its network.  Retention is a source of inspiration and satisfaction for staff, patients and their families.  The organization's  success in  building a high retention environment has been founded in a belief that establishing a research culture and a learning organization are critical to creating a practice that enables nurses to become scholar practitioners and integrate questions about care with new knowledge through research and the application of best practices.

UHN is  a proactive nursing organization with a strong focus on the development of inter-professional education and collaboration and are constantly focussed on a vision of global leadership in nursing, new knowledge and innovation in patient-centered care.

The organization is extending its  reach through global practice.  Discussions are underway with nursing colleagues in Ethiopia and in Bahrain.

UHN has established an urban and remote healthcare system partnership,  sharing staff with Weeneebayko Health Ahtuskaywin, the first First Nations led group of federal and provincial facilities within the Hudson’s Bay and James Bay region in Canada.
