NIGH Launches Global Music Video on Nursing

A new high-definition video portraying the global nursing community at work worldwide is here — in seven languages — for you to share with colleagues, family and friends to join in celebrating the 2010 International Year of the Nurse and beyond.

Reducing Mother and Child Death: Nurses and Midwives Now More Than Ever!

This timely work clearly portrays the vital role of nurses and midwives who are, essential to reducing maternal and child death worldwide. These two critical concerns — of the 2010 G-8 and G-20 Summits in Canada, the UN Economic and Social Council and the UN Millennium Development Goals Summit in July and September, 2010, in New York City — were seen by Florence Nightingale as fundamental to human progress. She said “though everybody must be born, there is probably no knowledge more neglected than this.”

Photos from 56 nations were chosen from WHO’s archives by NIGH International Co-Director Deva-Marie Beck. They illustrate the devoted and diverse daily work of nurses caring for others to be well and midwives caring for mothers to be well and their babies to be healthy. Spanning more than 60 years since WHO’s founding, the photo essay moves around the globe to the music of Natalie MacMaster.

The essential role of nurses and midwives, in homes, communities and hospitals, in nurturing the health of others, is revealed to the rhythm of Natalie’s violin accompanying notes of description and tribute from nursing leaders from across the world.

This video also quotes WHO Director General, Dr. Margaret Chan, declaring that, “I do not believe we will be able to reach the Millennium Development Goals unless we return to the values, principles and approaches of primary health care… Decades of experience tell us that primary health care is the best route to universal access, the best way to ensure sustainable improvements in health outcomes, and the best guarantee that access to care will be fair.”

Total viewing time is six minutes. Seven language versions are available, here below, listed in alphabetical order: Arabic, English, French, Mandarin, Portuguese, Russian and Spanish.
